H. Brenner Sadler

Attorney Brief

Mr. Sadler is a director of the firm and has been with the firm since 1972. He is Board Certified in Taxation by the Louisiana Bar Association. He has more than 37 years of experience in the areas of taxation, commercial and business transactions, estate planning, wills and successions, commercial banking transactions and contractual negotiations and disputes. He also advises health care providers in various corporate, health and business law matters.

Education

Mr. Sadler holds a B.S. from Louisiana State University in 1969; a Juris Doctorate from Louisiana State University School of Law in 1972 and a Master of Laws (LLM) in Taxation from Georgetown University in 1974.

Narrative

Mr. Sadler has handled numerous commercial transactions involving complex business and tax issues. He has consulted a number of physicians, hospitals and other health care providers with respect to organizational, commercial and tax issues. He has also handled many sizable property divisions. Mr. Sadler holds an AV® Peer Review Rated certification from Martindale-Hubbell. He was named to Louisiana Super Lawyers in 2009 and 2010 in the area of Taxation.

Mr. Sadler has been a member of the Louisiana State Bar Association since 1972. He is a member of the Sub-Committee on Trusts of the Louisiana Law Institute, and has served on that committee for almost 30 years. He is a past member of the Taxation Specialization Board of the Louisiana Bar Association. He is admitted to practice before all of the Federal Courts of Louisiana, including the United States Fifth Circuit Court of Appeals. He is also a member of the Alexandria Bar Association and Louisiana Association of Hospital Attorneys.

Community Activities

Mr. Sadler is a board member on the Central Louisiana Conventions and Visitors Bureau.  Mr. Sadler serves as a director on the Central Louisiana Community Foundation and the St. Frances Cabrini Hospital Foundation. Mr. Sadler is President of the Krewe of Parlangua. He is a member of St. James Episcopal Church and a past Vestry member.

FREDERICK B. ALEXIUS

Attorney Brief

Mr. Alexius is a director and corporate secretary of the firm. He joined the Provosty firm in 1978 after eight years of practice in New Orleans. His areas of practice include professional liability defense, health care law, general civil practice and mineral rights and transactions.  Mr. Alexius also concentrates on Commercial Litigation, Hospital and Medical Administration, Medical Staff Issues, Oil and Gas and Wills and Estates.

Education

Mr. Alexius holds a Bachelor of Arts from LSU, 1963 and a Juris Doctorate from LSU Law Center, 1970.    

Narrative

Mr. Alexius has tried numerous medical malpractice defense cases, both jury and bench trials. He has represented hospitals and physicians in contract negotiations and in medical staff matters [credentialing, supervision, discipline] as well as the drafting of medical staff and allied health care professional bylaws, rules and regulations.  He has assisted in organizing and creating business entities. In mineral matters he has represented both lessors and lessees in lease and related negotiations, rendered mineral title opinions and represented parties in mineral litigation.  He served as Clerk to Mr. Justice Albert Tate, Jr., Supreme Court of Louisiana 1970-71.

Following admission to the Louisiana State Bar Association in 1970, Mr. Alexius has been admitted to the United States District Courts for the Eastern, Middle and Western Districts of Louisiana, the United States Court of Appeals for the Fifth Circuit and the United States Supreme Court. He is a member of the American Bar Association, American Health Lawyers Association, Alexandria Bar Association, and the Louisiana Association of Defense Counsel; he is a former member of the House of Delegates, LSBA, and served as Chair, Section of Mineral Law. Currently, he is a member of the Council of the Louisiana Mineral Law Institute. He also served as Vice Chair of the Medical Ethics Committees of Huey P. Long Medical Center and CHRISTUS St. Frances Cabrini Hospital. Mr. Alexius has lectured at several LSU CLE seminars on the topics of Informed Consent, Advance Directives, End of Life Decisions and Traps for the Unwary in Handling Medical Malpractice Claims.

Joseph J. Bailey

Attorney Brief

Mr. Bailey is president and a director of the firm. He has been with the firm since 1989.  He has over 25 years of extensive litigation experience, in the areas of reinsurance and excess insurance, workers compensation claims and premium disputes, toxic tort, environmental disputes, annexation disputes, property rights and other complex civil litigation.   He also regularly advises clients in insurance, environmental and other regulatory matters. Mr. Bailey was a practicing chemical engineer in manufacturing prior to entering law.

Narrative

Mr. Bailey represents local, national, and international industrial and commercial clients in a wide variety of areas. He has successfully tried many complex cases, including reinsurance arbitrations, toxic tort litigation, railroad litigation, annexation litigation, including several jury trials involving toxic tort and death.  Mr. Bailey served as general counsel for a workers’ compensation self insurance fund and has handled numerous regulatory matters related to insurance and the environment.  Mr. Bailey has in-depth legal knowledge of all aspects of workers' compensation including claims, premiums, medical billing, regulatory matters and reinsurance disputes. Mr. Bailey holds an excellent AV® Peer Review Rated certification from Martindale-Hubbell.

Mr. Bailey has been a member of the Louisiana State Bar Association since 1989.  He is admitted to practice before all of the Federal Courts of Louisiana, including the United States Fifth Circuit Court of Appeals. He is a member of the Environmental Section of the State Bar and served as Section Chair in 2006. He served on the RBCA advisory liaison group for the Louisiana Association of Business and Industry. He is a member of the Louisiana Association of Defense Counsel, Louisiana Association of Defense Counsel, the Alexandria Bar Association, and Air and Waste Management Association. He has presented as a CLE lecturer in the subjects of workers’ compensation and environmental law.

H. Bradford Calvit

Attorney Brief

Mr. Calvit is a director of the firm and has been with Provosty, Sadler & deLaunay since 1987. He has more than 20 years of experience in litigation in the areas of insurance defense, including products liability and automobile negligence claims. Mr. Calvit’s area of practice also includes suits against political subdivisions and, more particularly, law enforcement officials.  Mr. Calvit has defended claims against sheriffs, deputies, police officers and other officials in state and federal court. Mr. Calvit also advises private prison management companies in various matters and handles all litigation arising from the operation of the prisons.

Mr. Calvit holds a B.S. from Louisiana State University, Baton Rouge, 1983 and a Juris Doctorate from Louisiana State University Law Center, 1987.

Narrative

Mr. Calvit has tried various complex cases, including civil rights cases against political subdivisions and public officials.  He has also litigated cases of a more diverse nature, including an annexation dispute between two political subdivisions, as well as prison inmate, copyright and class action suits. Mr. Calvit holds an AV® Peer Review Rated certification from Martindale-Hubbell. He is very active in youth sports and has served on numerous boards and committees, including soccer and softball.

Mr. Calvit is also admitted to practice before the United States Supreme Court.  Mr. Calvit has been an instructor and lecturer at the Alexandria Police Regional Training Academy since the early 1990s and at the Rapides Parish Sheriff’s Office Corrections Academy since it began operations in 1999.  In addition, Mr. Calvit was a speaker at the Fifth International Breachers Symposium and has been a lecturer for C.L.E. programs.

Catherine G. Brame

Attorney Brief

Ms. Brame joined the firm in 1991 and is a director with the firm. Prior to becoming an attorney, Ms. Brame earned her Paralegal Certification from Tulane University. After several years as a litigation paralegal, she entered law school and has been in practice since 1988.

Education

B.S from Louisiana State University in 1978; Paralegal Certification from Tulane University in 1982; and a Juris Doctorate from Loyola University in New Orleans in 1988. Ms. Brame has a general legal practice.

Narrative

Since 1994, Ms. Brame has been managing the section of the law firm which provides legal services to members of LegalShieldSM and includes overseeing a number of staff and attorneys. The legal issues addressed by the LegalShieldSM section of the law firm include a variety ranging from succession issues to personal injury to defense matters. LegalShieldSM has been in business since 1972 and provides access to legal services to members across the United States and Canada. She is a member of the Alexandria Bar Association and was the first woman elected to serve as President of the Association in 1995.  She served on the Executive Committee from 1992-1997, and was Secretary/Treasurer from 1993-94 and Vice President from 1994-95.  Ms. Brame served on the Hearing Committee for the Louisiana State Disciplinary Board from 1995-2001, including service as Chair from 1996-2000. From 1996-97, she served on the Louisiana Certified Paralegal Certifying Board.  Ms. Brame is a Fellow in the Louisiana Bar Foundation and a member of the American Inns of Court of Alexandria-Pineville.

John D. Ryland

Attorney Brief

Mr. Ryland is a director with the firm and has been with Provosty since 1996. He has more than twenty years of litigation experience in various areas of the law, and also advises clients in corporate and taxation matters. Mr. Ryland concentrates his practice in the areas of Commercial Litigation, Corporate Law, Taxation, Estate Planning, Personal/Commercial Property and Casualty Litigation.
